Overview of the Units

Each unit contains an activity or set of activities. Each activity provides the facilitator with the objectives, materials, preparation, and suggested process for the facilitator to follow. Related handouts, overheads and worksheets follow each activity.

Unit 1: Getting started

This unit provides participants and facilitators with a chance to introduce themselves and to establish the objectives of the training. It also reviews the fundamental principles of mental health promotion, and begins an exploration of common community mental health issues.

Unit 2: Analyzing community issues and resources

This unit looks at the initial activities that are essential to successful mental health promotion activities: defining and analyzing the issue, and building on the strengths and assets of the community.

Unit 3: Focus on facilitation

This unit provides an introduction to the basic principles of effective facilitation. By reviewing facilitation techniques and approaches and working in small groups, participants will prepare to lead Day Two of the workshop.

Unit 4: Planning your project

This unit explores a practical process for planning community mental health promotion projects. It provides participants with an opportunity to review the importance of creating a mission, and setting goals and objectives.

Unit 5: Securing resources

This unit looks at the kinds of in-kind and financial resources that community mental health promotion projects commonly require, and explores ways of raising those resources.

Unit 6: Carrying out your project

This unit focuses on several issues related to the successful implementation of mental health promotion initiatives: building partnerships and generating and sustaining the commitment of community members.

Unit 7: Evaluating your project

This unit introduces the basic concepts of evaluation and describes the techniques commonly used to evaluate mental health promotion projects.

Unit 8: Keeping your project going

This unit uses a car analogy as a tool to raise awareness of typical sustainability issues. It also provides participants with an opportunity to reflect on their learning and the how they will put it to use in their community.
