Transitions to Higher Education

Helping the student make decisions about continuing his/her studies

Questions to work through with the student

Is education currently a priority for the student? Is there anything else that needs to be a higher priority for him/her right now?

Is his/her illness sufficiently stabilized to allow him/her to concentrate on his/her education?

How much does the student know about the demands of academic life, such as registering for classes, navigating a campus, taking notes, reading and writing assignments, or taking exams?

What are the student’s physical, intellectual, and emotional needs and limitations in dealing with those demands?

Does the student have the persistence and confidence to face frustrations, get the information s/he will need from school administrators, and advocate for his/herself if necessary? If not, who can the student rely upon for support?

Is the student able to keep good records of applications, forms, and other paperwork? If not, who can help?
