Transitions to Higher Education

Helping the student make decisions about continuing his/her studies

The decision to seek employment, attend college, enter an apprenticeship, or go on to university can be a complicated one, especially for students with mental health problems. In addition to predictable concerns about whether the student has the financial resources for further schooling, a student with mental illness will also need to take into account how their illness may affect their ability to reach their educational goals.

Teachers and guidance counsellors can help the student work through some of the important questions s/he will need to consider, such as:

Will the student be able to handle the demands and stresses of higher education?

Are the student’s goals realistic?

Is the particular institution s/he is interested in attending able to accommodate his/her particular needs?
