Unique position of school personnel

Research has consistently shown that teachers and guidance counsellors play an important role in the recognition and support for students with mental health problems

Youth will approach friends, family and teachers before doctors for help (Kutcher et al 1996)

Teens who have attempted suicide take teachers into confidence before other professionals (Kutcher et al 1996)

School personnel such as guidance counsellors, special education teachers and school psychologists show a high degree of effectiveness in recognizing psychopathology in youth (Esposito et al, 2002)

For many students dealing with serious mental health problems, it is not uncommon for a year or more to pass between the onset of their symptoms to receiving a diagnosis. During this time kids are in classrooms, often suffering through painful and debilitating symptoms.

Teachers spend a great deal of time with their students, and are often the best judges of changes in their cognitive and emotional behaviour. It’s essential that teachers have the information they need to recognize problems early and get students the help they need. Like many other illnesses, early diagnosis equals better outcomes.
