Our 2008 White Cross Christmas 'elves'! |
What is White Cross?
White Cross is a program that was established in the early 1960's by the Canadian Mental Health Association/P.E.I. Division to provide social and recreational activities for people who experienced mental health problems. Currently, it is a shared program delivered by a dedicated committee with participants from Hillsborough Hospital, McGill Centre, Queens County Residential Services and coordinated by CMHA/PEI.
White Cross Objectives
To plan and provide pre-scheduled social and recreational activities, twelve months of the year, in Queens County.
- To teach and encourage the members of White Cross appropriate socialization skills in an informal unstructured manner.
- To provide an Island-wide Christmas gift program for White Cross members.
- To use social and other recreational activities for the purpose to educate the public, on an informal basis, about mental health disorders.
- To provide an opportunity for community service clubs and organizations to carry-out their mandate.
The White Cross Program
The White Cross program is delivered by a volunteer committee with the part-time assistance from a couple of CMHA staff. The committee invites service clubs and community groups to sponsor White Cross socials at different times of the year. The socials have traditionally been in the form of dances, however they can be as varied as the sponsoring group would like them to be. The White Cross Committee is responsible for notifying the member, arranging transportation and supervision of the events.
Membership
An individual may become a member of the White Cross program if:
- his/her primary problem is a mental or emotional disorder;
- opportunities for socialization are limited;
- he/she is not an abuser of alcohol and other drugs and is appropriately dressed;
- he/she is over 18 years old.
Individual or Community Involvement
Individuals or groups interested in becoming members of, or in assisting the White Cross program in any way, are encouraged to contact the Canadian Mental Health Association/P.E.I. Division (contact information below).
