Enhancing the potential of people with a mental illness to pursue educational opportunities is a focus for CMHA. According to Statistics Canada, teenagers and young adults aged 15-24 experience the highest incidence of mental disorders of any age group in Canada.
The school environment poses distinct challenges, but research and experience has showed that with understanding and co-operation on the part of administrators, teachers, parents and students, a young person’s education does not have to be derailed by a mental illness or mental health problem.
In this section, you will find information and resources for students, parents, teachers and counsellors that provide insight, tips and suggestions for helping young people to cope with mental illness and enjoy success in school and in life.
In November, 2004, the CMHA completed two projects focusing on the challenges of pursuing education while living with a mental illness. The Mental Health and High School project was aimed at educating students, parents and high school staff about dealing with a mental illness or mental health problem. Our Higher Education project gathered information and experiences from college and university students with psychiatric disabilities, as well as from staff, from all across Canada.
